The Enneagram and Spirituality

My first encounter with the Enneagram occurred in 1994, when a classmate at the Candler School of Theology urged me to participate in a session on personality types led by a professor in the Master of Divinity program. My acquaintance, who was enthusiastic about this new instrument known as the Enneagram, urged me and a few other people to immerse oneself in this new understanding. I had no idea that this unexpected contact with the Enneagram would have such a profound impact on my personal and professional development.

As the professor discussed some of the dark parts of my Type 4 pattern, I felt seen, exposed, and vulnerable for the first time.

I had never felt this way before.

Over the following 20 years, I read a slew of books, engaged in a variety of amusing talks with friends and coworkers, and participated in a couple of Enneagram workshops.

As one of my instructors, Russell Hudson, says, “Type isn’t only a type of person; it is also a road to God.” CH: I feel it is sacred because, as a map of our soul, it is a caring drawing of the possibilities that lay ahead for each individual. Why the Enneagram of Personality is becoming popular with Christians and other faith groups

Sandra Smith is perplexed as to why the Enneagram has gained such popularity in religious organizations in recent years. She speculated that it may be due of social media, or that it might be because of the widespread practice of classifying one another. The Enneagram, on the other hand, is not a typing system, according to Smith, a trained consultant and teacher of the Enneagram. Traditional Enneagram (History) — The Enneagram Institute

Even though the Enneagram of Personality Types is a modern synthesis of several old wisdom traditions, Oscar Ichazo is credited with being the one who first conceptualized and implemented the system. Born in Bolivia, Ichazo grew up there, and also in Peru, before moving to Argentina as a teenager to study at an inner-work school he had come across. Ichazo has been described as “a man of many faces.” Following that, he traveled around Asia, acquiring further information before returning to South America, where he began to put together a methodical approach to all he had learnt.

He taught in Chile throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s before relocating to the United States, where he lived until his death in 2020.

A group of American students, including noted psychologists and writers Claudio Naranjo and John Lilly, traveled to Arica, Chile to study with Ichazo and to gain firsthand experience with the methods for achieving self-realization that he had developed during his time in South America.

The Arica school, like any serious system of inner work, is a vast, interwoven, and at times complex body of teachings on psychology, cosmology, metaphysics, spirituality, and other topics, all of which are combined with various practices to bring about transformations in the consciousness of the individual practitioner.

  2. The Enneagramsymbol has ancient origins that may be traced back at least as far as Pythagoras’s writings on the subject of geometry.

Ichazo’s own comments on the subject: “A distinction must be made between the essence of a man and the man as shown in his ego or personality.

When this occurs, several things happen: the ego begins to grow, karma accumulates, a transition occurs from objectivity to subjectivity, and man is transformed from essence into personhood.” (See Ichazo’s interviews on page 9 for further information.) The Enneagram, in this regard, was seen by Ichazo as a method of delving further into intricacies pertaining to the organization of the human soul, and specifically into the manner in which true soul characteristics of Essence became distorted, or constricted into states of ego.

  1. His Enneagram ideas were based on a subject that has appeared repeatedly in Western mystical and philosophical tradition: the idea of nine holy forms.
  2. During the third century of our era, the Neo-Platonic thinkers, notably Plotinus, advanced this concept even farther in his key book, The Enneads, which is still in print today.

In this approach, the Passions and Ego-fixations symbolize the ways in which spiritual attributes are reduced to ego states. These nine methods are also the nine ways in which we lose our connection with the Divine. Ones are visionaries who have the ability to see a perfect world. There is only one problem with this: it only exists in their minds. They’re idealists, to put it mildly. Type FOUR: The Romantic or Individualist
