The majority of us engage in some type of spiritual or religious ritual at home on a regular basis or on a sporadic basis, but only a small percentage of us have a holy place in our homes for meditating, reading religious texts or spiritual literature, praying, or burning incense on a regular basis. The first time I visited India, I was surprised to see a sacred space in every home I went to.

Using incense, lighting candles, praying, and practicing meditation techniques such as mala beads and reciting the mantras were all done in this area. In some larger residences, there was even a separate chamber dedicated to spiritual exercise and meditation. As I sat in this sacred spot in my Indian house each day, practicing my mala beads meditation, I became more and more aware of how serene and concentrated I was all the time. There were no outside distractions to contend with. I was able to sit with my back straight, burn incense, meditate, and pray for extended lengths of time while maintaining my posture.

After I finished praying, the entire house felt purified.

The idea of having a sacred area in my house appealed to me greatly.

If you want to create your own sacred space in your home, here are some simple steps you can follow:

Once your holy space is complete, add a meditation pillow or a comfy stool to the area so that you may sit and read or meditate while in the space.

A few months ago my therapist suggested that I reconnect and talk to my angels. As I contemplated if it was time to find a new therapist (I had grown accustomed to using my analytical mind, full of reason, to navigate through life), I realized I had drifted far from the imaginative energy that the spiritual world has to offer. Maybe it was from years of being indoctrinated to believe that intellectualism supersedes spirituality; I found myself looking down my nose at the notion that my hippie days might not be over.

It took a few very long weeks to get back to my normal busy-bee speed.

One thing became very clear: it was past time for me to slow down and pay attention to my body’s signals. Even when I was recuperating, I could see all of the projects around the home that I wanted to do and all of the nooks and crannies that needed to be cleaned—but I couldn’t do anything about it because I was in pain. That meant I had to be patient as my energy levels recovered. My angels appeared to me in the calm of the moment, during my period of waiting. It’s not so much that I had a vision or had a dialogue as it is that I was met by an outpouring of creativity.

After accepting the fact that life is more exciting when my heart and intellect are open to something greater than myself, I began to notice my difficulties with slowing down begin to melt away.

Clearing, concentrating, and waiting are all part of the ritual that begins the process.

Deep cleaning and (once again) removing superfluous objects took up the most of my time in the days leading up to the event.

I talked with my pals what I wanted to bring into my house when they came over to help with the cleansing.

During our conversation, we also explored the types of mindsets, bad habits, and energies that I wished to be free of.

Together, we brought two sage smudge bundles, a stick of palo santo, frankincense, myrrh, a candle, an empty jar of salt, and a singing bowl to share with our community.

It was a lightbulb moment.

The cleaning of energy was in full swing, and it felt wonderful to be in it.

My house is a safe haven, and I feel protected by the walls that surround me, as well as by the affection of my friends and the warmth of my family.

These are the things that make up ordinary life: the floors that I wash, the table that I arrange, and the pear cobbler that I bake.

It gives our houses a greater sense of significance when we have this sort of spiritual connection to them.

Keeping our houses sacrosanct in this way helps us to appreciate the value of our possessions, and we become more cautious and courteous in general.

As I think, we must begin with ourselves and then go out beyond our egos in order to unify and restore our fractured society.

While there are moments when I convince myself that there is nothing more to this world than what we can see and experience, I now know that it is possible to connect with an unseen source of life-giving energy, regardless of whether the spirit realm exists or is perceived to exist.

It may be anything as easy as being inspired to acquire new habits or routines, or something as thrilling as being inspired to move and change everything in order to build a completely new life for oneself. Allow your residence to serve as a sanctuary for your spirit.
