During their adolescent years, some of the younger readers of this site may have been exposed to the horrors of war. Since World War II, a great deal has been written on how war affects children, how to rehabilitate war-affected children (tertiary prevention), and how to make the experience of being in a war zone less harmful for children (secondary prevention).

While in a previous essay in this series (1), I discussed strategies for preventing specific conflicts, in this article, I will address the more general topic of replacing our current war system with a peaceful system.

The impact of war on children

Children are affected by war in the same ways that adults are affected, but in somewhat different ways. First and foremost, children are reliant on the affection, empathy, and attention of those who care about them. In times of war, children’s attachments are frequently broken owing to the death of their parents, the excessive concentration of parents with protecting and providing for the family, and the emotional unavailability of sad or preoccupied parents. The kid may be in substitute care with someone who only modestly cares for him or her – such as relatives or an orphanage – and hence is not receiving adequate nutrition.

Moral and spiritual ramifications It is possible that children will suffer a loss of meaning in their construction of themselves in their world if they are exposed to indifference from their environment, or worse, malevolence.

During training to kill as a member of a military unit, they may have their moral framework forcefully demolished and replaced with a new one.

Children may be separated from their communities and their cultures during conflict, only to have them reconstructed in refugee or diaspora settings later on.

Child soldiers are a problem. Hundreds of thousands of young individuals under the age of 18 are believed to be serving in militias across about 60 nations worldwide. They are especially prone to all of the negative consequences described above (5).

Remedial strategies

Action on this cluster of sad events is typically divided into two categories: how to reduce some of the harm done to children, and how to heal children who have already been harmed by the events.

Making war less damaging to children (secondary prevention)

1. Comply with international humanitarian law when it comes to the protection of children during wartime situations. Concerning the protection of war-affected children in relation to food, clothing, medication, education, and family reunification, the Geneva Conventions and the Convention on the Rights of the Child are both in effect at the same time. Physical and psychological rehabilitation are implemented to varied degrees, depending on the resources available to the organization. Occasionally, they are insignificant or non-existent. Many of us are weighed down by emotions such as wrath, unforgiveness, pride, comparisons, insecurity, disharmony, fear, and the list goes on and on.

Some of our most serious concerns are essentially spiritual in nature.

Craving and Praying for Spiritual Vision

We also require spiritual vision – a clear knowledge of who we are in Christ and what that involves in our lives. As Priscilla reminds us, God has supplied us with all we need in order to win the spiritual battles we encounter; nevertheless, she emphasizes that we must first recognize this, then believe it and then act on it. In addition, it is through prayer that we are able to discern and employ the spiritual weapons indicated in Ephesians 6 in our spiritual combat. “It is really a repetition, a different method of articulating what Paul had previously explained in the remainder of his letter when he mentions spiritual armor in Ephesians 6:10-20 (truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, God’s Word, prayer).

Years ago, I came across a proverb that stuck with me, and I’ve never forgotten it. When it comes to war and military acts, we Christians don’t tend to think in terms of them. This is despite the fact that the Bible makes it quite plain that there is, in fact, a conflict taking place at a number of different moments.

  • We need discernment to recognize when we are being attacked. Having a thorough understanding of the power of prayer
  • We need insight into our weak points so that we can anticipate where an attack will come from.

Let me be clear: I am not a member of the club that believes that a devil lurks behind every tree. In fact, I am the polar opposite of that group. However, it would be naive to believe that there is no fight and that everything is perfect. Despite the fact that we must recognise and prepare for this war, we must also keep it in proper perspective: The enemy is vanquished, and Jesus has triumphed over the adversary. However, until that final triumph is available for us to experience, we must sweat more in peace in order to bleed less in battle.

Let’s get started with the basics. The Bible assures us that nothing, absolutely nothing, will be able to derail God’s good intentions for our children, even if they are under spiritual assault. Plans of the enemy will be thwarted because of God’s mighty protection. Regarding our adversary, we learn in Revelation 20 that he has already conceded the battle to the other side. Amen! The struggle is now our responsibility as Christians! We must understand the various ways in which the enemy spiritually attacks our children, learn some key Bible verses to pray over our children during the battle, and teach our children practical skills to help them grow deeply in their relationship with God by spending time in quiet time every day with Him.

What we want is for our children to realize how much God appreciates them and that nothing or no one has the power to change who they are as believers in Christ.

  • He teaches our children to judge their own worth by their outward appearance, their achievements, and their possessions
  • He teaches them that life is all about them and their pleasure, and that they must ignore the voice of conviction that tells them the difference between right and wrong
  • He teaches them that life is all about them and their pleasure
  • He teaches He points out their shortcomings and failings, as well as being quick to criticize our children for their blunders.

How You Can Pray for Your Kids:

  • Encourage them to have a close connection with God from an early age, so that they can learn to distinguish His voice over the cacophony of the crowd
  • And Pray that they would be robust and strong in the knowledge that they were created on purpose and with a purpose by our Creator
  • Prayerfully ask that they will continue to grow stronger and stronger in the life-changing knowledge that they are loved by God on a daily basis.

We want our children to have a great appreciation for the exquisite manner their individual bodies are constructed, and we want them to grow up recognizing their bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit who value purity and sexual abstinence until marriage as a result of this reverence.

How the Enemy Spiritually Attacks Our Kids:

  • He informs our children that they are not uniquely created, but are rather the consequence of a random collection of DNA that has taken millions of years to develop
  • He persuades our children that they are merely animals with physical desires that deserve to be satisfied, and that sexual pleasure is simply one of those desires that should be satisfied without any emotional attachment
  • He persuades our children that they are merely animals with physical desires that deserve to be satisfied

  • Encourage your children to regard their sexuality as a real gift from God, and to treat it as such by preserving it as a treasured treasure to offer to their future spouse
  • And Ask God to guide your children in choosing purity in the face of temptation so that they will respect God, their own selves, and anybody else they may damage as a result of pre-marital sexual activity. Prayerfully consider if your children fully comprehend the fact that they were created particularly as males or females for a reason and that there is nothing about their body that is a “mistake.” Preferably, pray for protection from the notion that your children are required to engage in any and all bad activities (such as eating disorders, drug misuse, or other harmful behaviors) in order to achieve a “preferable” form or figure.

Ideally, we want our children to grow up in an environment where they may be influenced toward God’s larger purpose for their lives, and we also want them to develop into persons who can influence others in significant ways for the greater good as they get older.

How the Enemy Spiritually Attacks Our Kids:

  • Instead of just surrounding our children with negative influences (he recognizes that this is an overtly evident strategy), he does all in his ability to (subtly) keep the positive influences out. He keeps our children away from the teachings of God’s word. The devil keeps us too busy and distracted to properly influence our children
  • He convinces them that truth is relative and not absolute, and that influencing others toward godliness is therefore irrelevant and judgmental of others’ beliefs
  • He convinces them that they can’t make a difference and that they don’t have the power to change things anyway, so why even try

How You Can Pray for Your Kids:

  • Pray for strong, godly influences to be present around your children at all times throughout their lives. Request heavenly protection from bad influences by praying for it. Prayerfully consider how your influence as a Christian parent could be a strong voice that impacts their decisions in a God-honoring manner. Pray that you will be brought to justice if you allow anything to divert your attention away from your primary goal of being a positive influence on your children. Please ask God to raise your children to be cultural influences for the future generation by praying for them. Pray that holiness and righteousness will be so abundantly present in their hearts that God’s hope, peace, and love will overflow from them to each and every individual they come into contact with. Pray that your children will grow up to be world-changers for God, who are not afraid to speak out for the truth, even when it is controversial.

  • Encourage your children to distinguish between their own feelings and God’s truth regarding a particular situation by praying for them. Pray for your children to be free of sloth and complacency. Specifically, pray that your children may understand at a young age how God wants them to be a part of His grand plan to teach the world about Himself. Pray for guidance on how to guide your children with caution and courage, while not letting our own worries about “what if.?” to stand in the way of how He intends to use them in the world

Money is something we want our children to have a good relationship with, and we want them to realize that material items do not equal a person’s value, nor do they offer ultimate satisfaction.

We want children to learn that while the goods of this world might provide us with pleasure, the true source of enduring happiness is found in God.

How the Enemy Attacks:

  • Similarly to Eve in the Garden, Satan teases and tempts our children by offering them attractive “fruit” (worldly things) that he claims would cure their problems and bring them fulfillment. To achieve their goals, he convinces them that they must do all in their power to succeed (even surrendering their morals, if necessary), because possessing a lot of money and stuff is the ultimate objective. Using a spirit of ingratitude, he keeps people feeling insecure, devoid of meaning, and concerned with ideas of what they do not have, causing them to be always on the lookout for more.

How You Can Pray for Your Kids:

  • Pray that God would assist you in setting a good example for your children in terms of how to handle their assets and money. Preferably, pray for your children’s perseverance in whatever career God sends them to, and that they labor with a glad heart, as if they were serving God directly. Pray that your children would understand from an early age that money and belongings are gifts from You, and that they must be kept in an open hand at all times so that You might use those gifts to benefit others. Specifically, pray that your children would find their genuine worth in their actual identity as children of God, rather than in the stuff they have or do not have
  • Pray for them to be content and appreciative in whatever position they find themselves in, whether affluent or impoverished.

When speaking about spiritual concepts, be extremely cautious not to stray too far beyond the scope of the Bible’s teachings and into the realm of “hidden teachings.”

Signs and Symptoms of Spiritual Distress

On Wednesday, October 10, 2018, in Spiritual Care, by. Spirituality may be a wonderful source of solace for those who seek it. A person may, nevertheless, suffer spiritual discomfort when confronted with adversity such as bereavement, bodily and emotional pain, or other difficulties. When a person no longer has the ability to find purpose, serenity, comfort, strength, or connection in their lives, they are said to be suffering from spiritual anguish. Individuals who have been diagnosed with a fatal disease or who are suffering from severe bodily or mental agony are understandably inclined to doubt their religious or philosophical convictions.

What are the symptoms of spiritual distress?

Spiritual sorrow may manifest itself in a variety of ways for various people. The following are some of the indications and symptoms of spiritual distress:

  • Difficulty sleeping due to feelings of rage or hopelessness
  • Depression and anxiety symptoms Feeling as if God has abandoned you
  • Inquiring about the meaning of life or the meaning of pain Questioning one’s convictions or having a sudden change of heart about one’s spiritual or religious beliefs
  • Inquiring as to why this circumstance has arisen
  • In search of spiritual assistance or direction

How can you help someone experiencing spiritual distress?

Active listening and providing support in a calm, peaceful environment are the most effective ways of assisting someone who is experiencing spiritual disorientation. Interact with the individual and learn about their background. Talking about both the good and the bad will help them gain a better understanding of the situation. Reach out to a spiritual leader (chaplain, minister, priest, rabbi, imam, etc.) if the individual requests it so that they can meet with them and answer their questions.

  • In addition, they can record tales, jot down their inquiries, and think about potential responses.
