Returning to normalcy was a difficult and painful process. The reason for this was not just that I had been away from regular life for the better part of a year, but also that I had faced my mortality in a very serious way and had to remodel my sense of self and thus my relationships with others. When I was in the hospital’s care, I had been the center of attention, and my family and friends had rallied around me. My attention had been drawn to the practicalities of getting to treatment sessions on time, resting, managing pain, and keeping up with complex personal care responsibilities, all of which had been my primary concern.

  • The first time I rode the subway following treatment, I appreciated the anonymity of the experience – no one on the train knew anything about what I had been through – but I also felt angry of the fact that no one knew what I had been through.
  • I had to confront my thought patterns and the language I was using to communicate my experience internally and with others.
  • When I was furious (which was understandable), I would become enraged about foolish but concrete things or become unduly obsessed with minor details.
  • To be quite honest, I’m still working on this one – meditation is a good buddy of mine.

It was necessary for me to learn how to look after myself. I thought on how I had allowed myself to get so unwell in the first place, and I resolved to find the root of the problem. Not so much the lifestyle changes I was doing as it was the letting go of unhelpful preconceptions and prejudices that I was experiencing. This was the path that led to self-discovery and the realization of one’s own inner truth. As I previously stated, I hadn’t been living completely before to becoming unwell – I had always thought that I wouldn’t be able to realize certain objectives while, in truth, I had been preventing myself from doing so.

What a jolt to the system!

A therapist, whom I would always suggest for this type of therapy, assisted me in letting go of a lot of baggage I had carried around from childhood and no longer needed to carry around.

5. The bliss body – (anandamaya kosha) – the body of consciousness.Our most subtle body, experienced in flashes of bliss where we feel at one with the universal consciousness.

After finishing treatment, I spent the summer re-establishing myself in the workforce and in my social life. My trauma had alienated me from others, and I yearned for a sense of belonging. But it was exhausting.   3. I followed this knowledge all the way down into my body, to the site of the disease and the physical and mental scars left behind by the chemotherapy.
  4. I sobbed, that deep silent form of sobbing, till the elements dissolved the borders of my skin.
  5. I have no clue how long I was lying there or whether anyone else happened to pass by.
  6. Affirmation: I am one with all things.There is nothing else that really matters.

Sthula sarira – gross body

The gross body, also known as Sthula sarira, is the material, physical, mortal body that eats, breathes, and moves (acts). Four states of consciousness and turiya

The three bodies represent the three states of consciousness: waking state, dreaming state, and profound sleep state. While Turiya (the superconsciousness state) is a fourth state that is associated with the states of Atman and Purusha, there is no such thing as a fifth state.


The fourth state is turiya, often known as pure awareness or superconsciousness. That which underlying and surpasses the three main states of awareness is referred to as the backdrop. Both absolute and relative Brahman, Saguna Brahman and Nirguna Brahman, are transcended in this consciousness, as are all other levels of consciousness. As the experience of the infinite (ananta) and non-different (advaita/abheda), it is liberated from the dualistic experience that arises as a consequence of the attempts to conceptualize (vipalka) reality.

Four bodies

This body (the Ninth Body, or the Delicate Body) bestows the subtle perceptive faculty to perceive the infinite inside both the physical and material planes. The tenth body (the Radiant Body) bestows spiritual majesty and splendour on the individual.

In Indian philosophy
