By being baptized, we pledge to attend our meetings, pay our tithe, and practice the Word of Wisdom – no drinking, smoking, or using illegal substances; we also agree to consume nutritious meals. In previous postings, I explored components of the Mormon Church’s culture as well as how our own culture evolves and is replaced with the culture of Christ over a period of time, with the transformation often taking many generations to be complete.

Unfortunately, for many of us, that is all we have ever known, and that is all we have ever truly experienced.

We can have wonderful experiences in the Church simply by following the fundamental commandments and attending our meetings, but this does not take us much beyond than a social club experience.

True religion

According to James (James 1:27)27 in the New Testament, This is pure religion and unblemished before God and the Father: to visit the fatherless and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unblemished from the rest of society. Rather than serving as a social club, the Savior’s restored Church seeks to teach us how to practice pure religion, the sort of religion that Jesus taught and lived. Yes, it is true that Jesus not only taught religion, but he also exemplified it, and he did it in the most sincere and unadulterated way possible.

During the process of distilling anything, you extract or draw out all of the impurities, leaving just the cleanest, most concentrated components remain.

If you want to be technical, this text reduces all of religion to two basic tasks.

On the surface, it appears to be a straightforward process.

Visit the fatherless and widows

This section’s title is a misnomer since it is not entirely accurate. I neglected to mention the most significant aspect of their illness. If you have ever spent time dealing with folks who are unable to fend for themselves, you have witnessed a wide range of hardships first hand. In most cases, the impoverished are also the ones who are suffering from this condition. Because of policy, by those who seek to take advantage of them, and by circumstances beyond their control, such as creditors who refuse to forgive a debt, medical bills they cannot pay, and health costs they cannot afford, the poor are forced to suffer physically because they are unable to be healed.

Rather than being a small group of orphans and widows, the fatherless and widows constitute a whole class of people in our modern world who live without providers or with insufficient income, and who have no one to assist them in raising their children or caring for them during their years of dependency.

Some members of this class require education in order to be able to get themselves out of their current predicament.

Others have been taught that the world owes them all they want and desire, and that their only obligations are to extend their hands in gratitude for the abundance they believe others owe them.

It requires revelation, a great deal of dedication, devotion, patience, love, longsuffering, deeply rooted kindness, and a genuine desire to alleviate as much suffering as possible before you can truly assist people.

This is not something that may be induced by a task or by social pressure. This type of service must devour our souls, or else we will quickly become weary of the uphill battle and lose our will to continue fighting.

Keeping ourselves unspotted

What exactly does the Lord mean when he advises us to keep ourselves unspotted in the eyes of the world? This notion is what I term counter intuitive, which means that it is not something that makes intuitive sense; rather, we must think about it in order to understand it.

Physical stains

When we bleed on ourselves, almost everything that our blood comes into contact with gets damaged. When it comes to blood stains, they are among the most hardest to remove from our clothing. This is something that every culture understands, and it has not altered since the beginning of the human race. Blood stains everything it comes into contact with. Consider the application of this information to spiritual misconduct, which is what we refer to as sin. We’re not talking about our shirt or pants anymore; we’re talking about our soul.

So, what will be the state of our souls by the time we reach the conclusion of our 85-year lifespan?

We end up living a life filled with regret, grief for the harm we have caused others, and anguish as a result of the repercussions of our personal acts.

Getting out spiritual stains

Via the blood of Christ, through his bodily sacrifice in Gethsemane and on the cross, we are promised that the shedding of his blood on our behalf will be able to cleanse our souls of the stains that we have placed there through our disobedience and sinful actions. For better or worse, Christ’s blood washes us, not taint us as some would have us believe. Our souls can become pure, white, and spotless before God only through the power of his forgiveness, and only through our repentance for what we have done or have not done in our lives.

  • The word “world” is used in the Bible to denote all that is in opposition to the things of God.
  • When we do so, the stains of our sins are “blotted out,” absorbed by his blood and atonement, and we are cleansed.
  • The majority of the benefits accessible from the Lord are only available to individuals who have been cleansed of the blood and sins of the world in which we dwell.
  • After being freed from the weight of shame and grief, we discover our spirits to be lighter and joyful than we could have ever dreamed possible.

That happiness manifests itself in a desire to spread that happiness to others. It occurs in the same way as the sky lightens when the sun rises in the sky. It is natural. It is impossible to distinguish between the two occurrences.

The connection

When we experience joy in our life as a result of being forgiven, we naturally begin to search for opportunities to provide joy to others. We’re back to the comparison of the light becoming stronger as the sun rises in the sky. It is at this point that our own happiness begins to extend beyond our own borders and strives to include others in its circle of impact. Our hearts grow to acquire Christ-like attributes such as the compassion He showed us in forgiving us, the love we feel coming from Him, and the joy we feel when we serve His other children as a result of our service.

  1. We learn through practice how to best assist others, becoming less quick to condemn others, more compassionate, and more patient – qualities that Christ refers to as longsuffering.
  2. Without a doubt, this is not the case.
  3. Without a doubt, it does.
  4. In this case, the key term is practice.
  5. We find out what works and what doesn’t work.
  6. Everyone has a unique set of requirements.
  7. It is possible to be friendly to someone while yet expecting them to take responsibility for their own actions and put forth effort in exchange for what they get.
  8. After all, this is His creation.

These are the workers of God who go forth to serve, clothed in strength and the spirit of godliness, who have learned what it is to rely on a greater force than themselves, and who have experienced firsthand the joy that comes from living their lives in the manner in which Jesus Christ lived his.

To be totally and compassionately present to anybody, regardless of their spiritual beliefs, ethnicity, or belief system, Pure Presence® is a systematic way for spiritual guides, companions, and ministry professionals.

It is in the’spiritual heart,’ as the yogic guru Ram Dass describes it, or in the ‘real self,’ as the Catholic theologian and contemplative Thomas Merton described it, that presence may be found.

The journey of a lifetime is indeed necessary in order to empty oneself of one’s own little ideas about what someone should believe or how they should live, as well as to bear loving witness to the wonder and mystery of an individual’s spiritual development and unfolding.
