It appears that the notion of kingship (or any sort of absolutist rule), as well as its strong association with and use of religion for the goal of legitimizing power, has existed practically throughout human history. It would be necessary to examine more how iconography contributed to buttressing the conceptual underpinning of divine kingship, particularly in Mesopotamia, but also in other regions where divine kingship has been established.

Apter 1992, Gilbert 1994, and Puett 2002 suggest that ancient Rome (for example, Price 1987), Africa (for example, Apter 1992; Gilbert 1994), and ancient China (for example, Puett 2002) are the finest candidates for such a cross-cultural comparison.

Additionally, it is unclear if comparable preconditions yield similar political-ideological consequences, and what the preconditions for such processes are in the first instance.

Considering the question of divine kingship in the context of the use of religion to justify authority in ancient societies is a good idea.

In this field of study, the Achaemenid empire provides a fresh viewpoint because of the wealth of historical and iconographic evidence that exists there (for example Lincoln forthcoming; Ehrenberg forthcoming).

Expectations

The cross-cultural and anthropological analogies proposed in this symposium will help us better comprehend divine kingship as a technique used by pre-modern rulers to consolidate their authority and establish new ideological foundations to support expanding political expansionist tendencies in the world. The conference will also contribute to our understanding of ancient Mesopotamian and ancient Egyptian kingship, provide fresh insights into the link between authority and religion in pre-modern society, and include ancient civilizations in a broader discussion of kingship in the world today.
